Wine Cellar Design Consulting for Architects & Interior Designers
A Wine Cellar is Only as good as its flow. A cellar may be magazine ready, but if it doesn’t prioritize storage and the client’s wine lifestyle along with design, it’s not doing its job.
Leaning on his 30+ years of wine expertise, TJ Douglas works with architects and Interior Designers to build wine storage spaces that are beautiful, functional, and built to grow with the collection. From coordinating on first sketches to the final layout, TJ ensures your project gets the wine knowledge it deserves.
Too often, beautiful cellars get built with improper airflow, impractical racking for how a wine cellar will actually work, and lighting that looks stunning but is slowly damaging bottles.
That’s not a design failure, it’s a knowledge gap. TJ provides the expertise that your project deserves.
TJ consults directly with architects, interior designers, and residential developers during the planning and design phase to make sure their clients’ dream cellar is also one that matches their wine lifestyle. Whether you’re working on new construction, a whole-home renovation, or a dedicated wine room addition, TJ helps your team build a performance-driven wine cellar.
The Missing Piece in Wine Cellar Design
TJ slots in wherever you need him - early in the design process to help shape the space, or later as a specialist to fine-tune the plans. Here’s what a typical engagement looks like.
How TJ Works with Your Team
Space & Capacity Planning
Climate Requirements
How many bottles does your client actually need to store, and what’s the right footprint? Options range from a dedicated wine room, to a built-in display wall, to a temperature-controlled closet. TJ helps you understand what the space needs to accomplish before a single wall goes up (or comes down!). He’ll work through bottle counts, collection type (every day bottles vs long-term investments), and future-proofing so the cellar grows with your client.
Racking, Storage
& Flow
Not all wine is stored the same way, and how bottles are organized matters more than most people realize. TJ advises on racking configurations, mixed storage formats for different bottle sizes (magnums, half-bottles, Bordeaux vs Burgundy bottle shapes), display vs bulk storage ratios, and how to design for easy retrieval. And don’t forget wood case storage! A well-designed cellar is one you actually want to use.
Wine storage has real environmental requirements, and the consequences of getting them wrong are expensive. TJ advises on optimal temperature and humidity ranges, discusses how the room’s size affects climate control decisions, and helps you ask the right questions about cooling systems. When it comes to lighting, he also advises on options that protect wine from UV exposure.
Plan Review & Onsite Visits
Once you have preliminary drawings or renderings, TJ can meet you onsite to review them through a wine expert’s lens. He’ll flag anything that might create challenges down the road and offer practical suggestions. His expertise is in keeping the design conversation focused on solutions, not problems. TJ can also coordinate racking orders to eliminate guesswork.
If your client is already in a finished cellar and needs help choosing wine and managing their collection, that's a different conversation. The good news is TJ does that too! Learn more about our cellar consultations and wine collection management services.
“My first ‘cellar’ was a wine rack in a dark corner of my closet. It took me twenty years to build the wine cellar of my dreams. I’m excited to help bring your vision to life!”
